I am absolutely amazed at the skill that went into the kimono. Where on earth did you find a blue haori to paint? Assuming that is what you did ^^' I've been wanting to make one forever, but am unsure as to where I'd start
Haori and most traditional Japanese clothing are actually very easy to make, much simpler than Western clothing. They are comprised basically just of squares of fabric sewn in straight lines (whereas western clothes it's a million weird shapes with seams that curve, zig zag, and do the macarana. T_T) There's a few patterns for kimono costumes which you can get if you really want a guide, Simplicity has one, but really you can for the most part figure out the pattern just by looking at a kimono closely. I have a yukata I studied the seams of and was able to figure it out though just to be sure I got the Simplicity pattern cause I didn't want to mess up. Turned out to be exactly like the pattern I'd drawn out using my yukata's measurements. XD But if you do want to buy rather than make I'm not sure where you can get one other than at anime conventions in the dealer's room or off the internet. I got my yukata from the Sakura Kimono Yukata Market website awhile back but I don't know if they had haori's. ^_^;
Thank you SO much! That was incredibly insightful. I do see what you mean about the simple lines out of which the clothing is composed. Looks like now it's time to get to work~
They're painted on with fabric paint! I've seen people do this costume with dye but I didn't really like how it looked since while sort of sporadic there is definitely a design to the white parts.
I get it but did you paint all of the white part, or did you sew a white part, and then added the details on white fabric paint? in case you painted all the white part, doesnt it feel a bit hard, rigid? o.o
Well there is a distinct texture and feel to those parts yes, but it isn't hard or rigid. A little stiffer than the unpainted fabric yes but not enough to in anyway affect wearing the costume, or folding it for storage (though sometimes when I unfold it it clings to the other painted parts, it never comes off or really sticks, just distinctly clings). And yeah, all is paint, I didn't even think to break up the haori with a second fabric. And not sure I'd want to since I'd have to paint the edges white anyway for the bubbles and then I'd have two different shades and textures of white, the fabric white and the paint white, to content with. If you could get the perfect paint and fabric combo it could work but it can be hard to match shades of white like that.
